I must preface this week’s #TBT post with the following:
Bless me Hollywood, for I have committed a cardinal sin. I went to see the Ghostbusters reboot before seeing the original. I didn’t mean to. I always intended to watch the original first, but it somehow just never happened. How many times should I ask Harold Ramis for forgiveness? How many Bill Murray movies must I watch to be absolved from this sin? Honestly, I’ll watch them all anyways. I don’t believe in admitting my guilt to humans for absolution, but this is a popular cliché, so I went with it.
Anyways this is a two for one post. First off, my pick for your TBT
Directed by: Ivan Reitman
Written by: Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis
Starring: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson
I can easily see why this is a classic. I get it. Also, the above gif might become my new TBT gif.
It has a great core cast.
I’m a sucker for some 80’s Sigourney Weaver.
I also want to be biffs with the secretary Janine.
More importantly, the world needs to remember what an international Canadian treasure Rick Moranis is…
Also, I want this sweet ride.
It is a great TBT and due to the popularity of the reboot it is being show on T.V. fairly often as well. If you’re lucky, it might also be at a theater near you.
you should check out.
Directed by: Paul Feig
Written by: Katie Dippold, Paul Feig
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones
The nice thing about seeing this first, I got to judge it on it’s own and not by how I think it stacks up to the original. We also have to look at the reason that movies like Ghostbusters get reboots and movies like Casablanca don’t. Casablanca is ~art~. Ghostbusters is an enjoyable experience that will honestly benefit from a fresh perspective and advances in technology. People who think that a female cast for the reboot “ruined their childhood”, need to find another blog to read. I’m also a believer that most movies are copy and some variation of the hero’s tale, but that is a post for another day.
Honestly, I liked it. For reasons and gifs listed below.
I thought the characters were complementary and funny.
Kate McKinnon is bae.
Christ Hemsworth is golden. The boy can do no wrong.
There are many more reasons why, but you should see it and then we can talk. I felt like this movie was able to stand alone and was a solid movie. If you haven’t given it a chance, catch it before it leaves theaters. It’s a good time. Also, if you haven’t seen the original, because you are a movie heathen like me– worry not. You’ll still have a great time.
Happy Thursday! Hope you enjoy a good throw-back with the Ghostbusters.
