Meet your new favorite cartoon duo.
Truthfully, in the name of writing, I’ve been on an animation kick, and looking at recent animated features. I’m rolling around an idea in my brain and I enjoy studying features and screenplays that I like when I’m writing. I also like checking out things that are getting buzz in the theaters. So this weekend, was Zootopia.
Aside from the obvious inclusion of anthropomorphic animals, I wasn’t entirely sure of the plot when I started the movie. Going in blind is my new favorite thing when it comes to movies. I was pleasantly surprised with Zootopia. It tackles a vast array of social issues in a way that kids can understand and adults can appreciate. The references were on point and the voice talent was stellar.
I’m also so pleased that little girls have a cop movie where the female lead isn’t the cop’s girlfriend. Judy Hopps is a badass. She’s also an amazing role model and a stellar character. She also brings to light the fact that girls (especially in fields like criminal justice) often have to work twice as hard to get the same treatment. Zootopia is a killer feminist animation. I wish I had Judy Hopps when I was little.
She uses her determination and wit 100% of the time. She accepts help when she needs it, because she is human, but she doesn’t sit around waiting for a knight in shining armor. She’s wholesome, relatable and and resilient. She is like a little, chipper Olivia Benson Bunny. I love it.
Also, her begrudging side kick is my favorite cartoon animal, a fox. Foxes make the best anthropomorphic animals. Need proof?
All the proof you need. Which leads me to this guy:
Nick Wilde is going to be added to the amazing canon of anthropomorphic foxes. He is already the new cartoon crush of the next generation. (Believe me, there is a lot of fan art out there already. The fan art is a little sexual and weird. Nick Wilde/Judy Hopps are also already popular on the cosplay world. ) So maybe he isn’t the cartoon crush of little girls, but he definitely has fans.
Both Judy and Nick have great character arcs and excellent dialogue. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman were great choices. They are both amazing voice actors, I was really impressed. I actually had to look up who did the voices after, they were familiar, but I didn’t spend the whole movie going “Michael Bluth is a fox”.
Zootopia also had another one of my personal favorite voice actors: Jenny Slate. I find Jenny Slate charming. She is an exceptional voice talent and comedian. She could voice any animal, and I would believe it. If are one of the one or two people who haven’t seen Marcel the Shell, then you should watch it.
Anyways. Watch it. Happy Monday.
